Recently on 29th the United States Coast Guard announced to award two shipbuilding contracts for a fleet of Six next-generation Arctic Security Cutters. These icebreaking vessels will play an important national defence, maritime security, economic protection, and search and rescue missions across the challenging polar environment.
Need of Ice-breaker
The Arctic is no longer a frozen backwater for America— it’s a region of intense geopolitical competition and growing economic opportunity. With retreating sea ice opening new shipping routes and natural resource possibilities, the U.S. wants to secure its northern maritime traffic.
Currently, the Coast Guard has a very limited icebreaking fleet compared to other Arctic powers. Modern icebreakers like ASCs are intended to fill a long-standing capability gap and help safeguard U.S. interests. America has also given contract to Finland to build high tech ice-breakers for which we have posted a detailed blog recently.
What Are Arctic Security Cutters?
Arctic Security Cutters are medium polar icebreakers designed specifically to operate in the harshest ice-covered environments on Earth. These vessels will be capable of:
Breaking through heavy sea ice, enabling access where traditional ships cannot
Long-range deployments without frequent resupply
