San Juan and Caribbean - airspace closures and aviation disruptions

Below is in short details of airport situation in Caribbean region

Airspace shut down over the Caribbean

  • The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued emergency NOTAMs closing key Caribbean and Venezuelan airspaces — including San Juan (Puerto Rico), Curaçao, Trinidad’s Piarco, and Venezuela’s Maiquetía FIR — for civilian flights due to ongoing military activity and safety risks.

Major airlines impacted

  • Flights by carriers like KLM, American Airlines, JetBlue, and Delta are being cancelled or rerouted away from the region as a direct consequence of these closures and heightened tensions.

Safety concerns raised

  • Authorities warn of escalation in military activity and unpredictable air defense responses, including possible GPS interference and risks of civilian aircraft being misidentified leading to chances to be attacked.

U.S. Military Action & Venezuela Conflict

• U.S. airstrikes and capture of Venezuelan leadership

  • On January 3, 2026, the United States reportedly conducted airstrikes inside Venezuela, including in Caracas, in a major escalation.

• Venezuelan government response

  • Venezuela has declared a state of emergency and condemned what it calls “imperialist aggression”, mobilizing national defense and appealing for international support.

Presently all the flights are cancelled and ships are diverted to another route. We have also mentioned the maritime impact of this escalation in our blog posted today.
