China Typhoon Disrupts Container Exports: Shanghai Backlog, Vessel Delays and Transshipment Delays

China’s latest typhoon disruption is continuing to affect container exports even after major ports in eastern China have reopened. The immediate weather shutdown has ended, but the larger problem is now the backlog of vessels and containers created by the disruption, with schedule reliability deteriorating across the wider Asian shipping network.
Incident
Typhoon Dolphin, the strongest typhoon to hit China so far this year, disrupted operations at Shanghai and Ningbo after making landfall on August 9. The shutdown followed earlier weather disruptions from Typhoons Bavi and Noul, leaving shipping lines with a significant accumulation of delayed vessels.
Linerlytica data cited by industry sources indicates that more than 2.4 million TEU of containership capacity was affected or stranded around Asian ports following the latest storm. Shanghai and Ningbo have been among the most heavily affected locations.
Shanghai’s Yangshan and Waigaoqiao terminals have now resumed operations, but the reopening has not immediately restored normal schedules. The South China Morning Post reported that pre-berthing waiting time at Yangshan Phase IV reached up to 10 days, with more than 30 vessels waiting for berths.
Chinese reports also indicate that the Shanghai and Ningbo ports resumed operations in stages from August 10–11, but cargo accumulation and vessel bunching continued after reopening.
Impact on China exports
For exporters, the key issue is no longer whether the port is open. It is whether the booked vessel can actually berth, load the container and depart on schedule.
The shutdown created a chain reaction:
Port closure → vessels wait offshore → vessels bunch after reopening → berths become unavailable → export containers accumulate → vessels sail late → downstream transshipment connections are missed.
Shipping lines are also using operational measures such as port omissions, revised rotations and alternative connections to recover schedules. Maersk, for example, had already announced Shanghai omissions following earlier weather disruption, with affected cargo shifted to alternative vessels or discharged at Hong Kong for onward connection.
This means that a container which successfully enters Shanghai or Ningbo today can still face a significant delay if its originally booked vessel has been rolled, omitted or arrives outside its planned window.
Transshipment is becoming the second bottleneck
The disruption is also moving beyond China.
When vessels leave Chinese ports several days late, they can arrive at major Asian transshipment hubs outside their original operating windows. That creates vessel bunching and missed feeder connections, particularly for containers requiring a second vessel to reach India, the Middle East, Africa, Europe or other destinations.
Singapore, Port Klang and Colombo are therefore important points to monitor. Current operational data shows that Singapore is experiencing tight terminal conditions and vessel bunching, while Colombo is operating near capacity with high transshipment demand and feeder schedule disruptions. Port Klang's vessel waiting time has been lower, but the wider network remains vulnerable to delayed and bunched arrivals.
This distinction is important: the transshipment ports do not necessarily need to be physically closed for cargo to be delayed. A late mother vessel can cause a container to miss its onward feeder or connecting mainline, leaving the box at the hub until the next available sailing.
Christmas shipments face a growing timing risk
The disruption comes during the important pre-Christmas export cycle. SCMP reported that the extreme weather struck during a prolonged peak shipping period and warned that the Shanghai disruption was already affecting Christmas shipments.
For retailers and manufacturers, the concern is therefore not limited to a few days of port closure. A container delayed at origin can subsequently lose its vessel connection at Singapore, Port Klang or Colombo, adding another several days to the transit time.
The result can be a multi-stage delay:
China origin backlog → late vessel departure → missed transshipment connection → additional hub dwell → late final vessel → delayed delivery.
What exporters should expect
The backlog is likely to take considerably longer to clear than the ports took to reopen. Industry reports indicate that Shanghai and Ningbo could require weeks rather than days to fully normalise vessel schedules.
Exporters with cargo moving from Shanghai, Ningbo and nearby Chinese gateways should therefore monitor:
actual vessel ETA rather than the original sailing schedule;
vessel berthing and cut-off changes;
roll-over and port-omission notices;
transshipment connections at Singapore, Port Klang and Colombo;
container dwell time at the hub;
revised ETA at the final destination.
The immediate typhoon threat has passed, but the shipping disruption has not. The next stage of the problem is schedule recovery, and for cargo already caught in the network, that recovery could extend well into the peak Christmas shipping window.
