Containers fall into water from Vessel Mississippi at Long Beach port in America

Incidence – Around 9 AM on 9th Sept’ 2025 stacks of containers collapsed from vessel Mississippi at Pier G Container terminal of Long beach port. The containers started slipping and the vessel tumbled off causing the ship to get disbalanced, the exact reason for stack collapsing is not known till now and the its under investigation

Below are the details of the vessel

  • Vessel Name – Mississippi

  • Vessel Flag – Portugal

  • IMO Number – 9954187

  • Length / Width – 255 meters / 37 meters

  • Type of vessel – Container ship

  • Operating Line – ZIM

  • Routing – The vessel has arrived from Yantian, China to US West Coast

 

Impact and Loss – Their has been no loss of life reported in the accident. As per the recent news, minimum 67 containers have been lost after stack collapsing and many containers on vessel have been damaged with deformity in size and damage to cargo. A barge has also been damaged which was along-side of the vessel.

 

Response – Their was a quick joint response from different agencies including the coast guard, Long beach department, Army corps engineers and other port departments.

A safety zone has been created covering 500 yards around the vessel to avoid any damage to port employees or to hull of the vessels moving in nearby areas.

 

Present status and future action plan – Presently the port operations has yet not started till 10th September afternoon. While the assessment is under process to get information of cargo inside the fallen containers and then to plan the evacuation of containers from the water so that safety is ensured for the movement of the future vessels in the  area
