
On 3:30 am , 13th May local time - An Indian-flagged cargo vessel reportedly sank off the coast of Oman after coming under a suspected drone or missile attack, adding fresh concern over the safety of commercial shipping routes near the Strait of Hormuz.
The vessel was reportedly transporting livestock from Berbera, Somalia, to Sharjah in the UAE when the incident occurred. According to reports, all 14 crew members were safely rescued by the Omani coast guard and no casualties were reported.
The livetock vessel was carrying 4000+ sheeps and goats which sank along with the vessel.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs strongly condemned the incident. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the attack as “unacceptable” and criticized the continued targeting of commercial shipping and civilian mariners in the region. The ministry stated that attacks on merchant vessels and actions that threaten freedom of navigation and maritime commerce must be avoided.
India also thanked the Omani authorities for conducting the rescue operation and reiterated concerns over the growing risks faced by merchant shipping transiting through the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most critical energy trade corridors.
