Grounded MSC Baltic III enters dismantling phase off Canada after failed salvage efforts

The grounded container ship MSC Baltic III has entered its deconstruction phase off Newfoundland, Canada, marking the final stage of a casualty response that began after the vessel ran aground during severe weather in February 2025. Salvage teams have started cutting up the damaged ship on-site after earlier recovery efforts proved unviable.

The vessel lost power before grounding, forcing the evacuation of all 20 crew members by helicopter without fatalities. Since then, authorities have focused on fuel removal, cargo recovery, pollution prevention and site stabilization before authorizing dismantling operations.

The case highlights the growing complexity and cost of responding to container ship casualties in environmentally sensitive coastal waters. For shipowners, insurers and salvors, prolonged wreck removal operations can extend for months, adding significant financial exposure beyond the initial grounding. The incident also underscores the importance of emergency preparedness, environmental risk management and rapid casualty response in modern container shipping.
