Foreign shipowners accelerate shift to Indian flag amid policy push

A fresh wave of vessel registrations under the Indian flag is gaining momentum, with global operators like CMA CGM and Unifeeder initiating new filings alongside Dynacom-linked entities.

Recent additions include a 2,600 TEU container vessel and an 1,800 TEU feeder ship, along with bulk carrier registrations routed via IFSC structures in GIFT City. The move reflects a growing preference among foreign shipowners to localise fleet presence.

The shift follows earlier participation from Mediterranean Shipping Company and Hapag-Lloyd, indicating a broader structural transition toward India’s registry.

Key drivers include regulatory simplification, tax efficiency through IFSC frameworks, and faster compliance processes. For operators with strong India trade exposure, reflagging is increasingly aligned with both cost and operational strategy.

Despite short-term disruptions linked to Gulf tensions, the registration pipeline remains active, reinforcing India’s ambition to emerge as a competitive global shipping hub.
