APEDA ends transition period for China-bound rice exports; stricter compliance now mandatory

India's rice exporters shipping consignments to China must now comply fully with APEDA's revised Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), following the end of the transition period on 1 July 2026. The updated framework strengthens sanitary and phytosanitary compliance, documentation, laboratory testing, traceability and registration requirements for exports destined for the Chinese market.

The revised procedure requires exporters to source rice from approved facilities, maintain end-to-end traceability and submit complete documentation before obtaining export clearance. The move follows increased scrutiny by Chinese authorities after recent consignments faced action over alleged non-compliance, highlighting the importance of meeting destination-country regulations.
