₹740-crore Kolkata Port upgrade by JSW to reshape Eastern India's container logistics

JSW Infrastructure's Kolkata Port project strengthens Eastern India's logistics network
JSW Infrastructure has secured a long-term concession to modernize and operate container facilities at Netaji Subhas Dock under Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, marking one of the most significant private investments in eastern India's port infrastructure. The project includes the reconstruction of Berth 8, mechanization of Berths 7 and 8, and an estimated capital investment of ₹740 crore under a 30-year PPP concession.
Once completed, the terminal will have a handling capacity of approximately 0.45 million TEUs (6.3 million tonnes annually), improving container handling efficiency for cargo moving through eastern and northeastern India, as well as Nepal and Bhutan. Interim operations are expected before full project completion, which is targeted for H1 FY2028.
The investment reflects a broader trend in India's logistics sector, where port modernization is driving improvements in multimodal connectivity, supply chain reliability, and industrial development. As manufacturing and exports expand across eastern India, upgraded port infrastructure is expected to reduce logistics costs, increase vessel productivity, and strengthen the region's role in national and international trade corridors.
