Indian government has issued a preventive alert on India Nepal border.
Since Nepal is a land lock country with low industrial output, it depends much on imports for its consumption thus its an import driven country.
The Export and Import from the Indian side is done by two modes
Rail
Road
Its done through different ports like – Visakhapatnam, Haldia and Kolkata and different India cities.
Rail movement
The exim containerized rail movement from Indian side is done through 2 borders Rail
Raxaul – Birganj border
Jogbani – Biratnagar border
The name of the border ICD (Inland Container Depot) given as per the name of cities on the both the sides of India – Nepal respectively.
Present status as on 9th Sept 2025 evening – the rail rakes are getting unloaded at Indian border without any hassle but not getting moved into Nepal.
How rail operation is done – The rail movement is done from India ports / cities till the Indian side of the ICD and from there the cargo is unloaded and taken further on trucks to final destination in Nepal.
For better understanding of the border ICD, let’s assume - it’s the same ICD with a border in between demarcating the Indian and Nepalese part of land. The rail stops at Raxaul ICD, cargo is unloaded and handed over to Birganj ICD and then transported further to Nepal by road on trucks registered in Nepal.
Road movement
For Exim movement by road there are 3 major borders
Raxaul – Birgunj border
Jogbani – Biratnagar border
Sanauli - Bhairahava border
Road operations – The Indian truck can complete the cargo delivery by two ways
Get the cargo unloaded at Indian border and transported further by road to destination at Nepal.
Or, the same Indian truck can go to the destination at Nepal and return back to India after delivering the cargo, the truck is given a pass for few days within which they have complete the to and fro journey and enter India. In case of exceptional delay the pass can be extended.
Usually once Indian registered truck reaches the border, they need to get customs clearance within 2 days after document submission after which the customs detention starts piling up. After getting customs clearance pass the same vehicle which is registered in India can enter Nepal to deliver the cargo.
Present status as on 9th Sept 2025 evening – The cargo unloading is done smoothly on Indian side but there is no further road movement to Nepal since morning 9th Sept’ 2025 but till 8th Sept’ 25 the movement to Nepal was allowed.
