Explosion and fire on MSC Giada III in the Gulf of Finland

Incidence - On 5 February 2026, container ship MSC Giada III experienced a sudden explosion and ensuing fire in the Gulf of Finland near Neva Bay, while en-route to Saint Petersburg, Russia from Belgium. The blast reportedly originated in the ship’s engine room, with flames spreading upward into the accommodation block and deck superstructure.

Images circulated on regional media showed the rear of the accommodation block engulfed in flames, prompting a swift rescue response by nearby Russian authorities.

All 22 crew members, including a Russian captain and Burmese seafarers, were reported uninjured and safely evacuated. Rescue efforts were supported by an icebreaker and Russian rescue vessels operating in the bay.

Despite being disabled by the explosion, the vessel has been towed into port at Saint Petersburg with no indications of hull breaches or marine pollution.  Presently the vessel is Saint Petersburg port and is under repair.
