DGFT restricts import of Platinum articles under HS code 71141920

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) of India has issued Notification No. 58/2025-26, on 5th Feb 2026, amending the import policy for articles of platinum covered under ITC (HS) Code 71141920 of Chapter 71, ITC (HS) 2022.

With immediate effect, the import policy for platinum articles has been revised from “Free” to “Restricted”, marking a significant regulatory shift in the precious metals segment.

 

What has changed?

As per the notification, DGFT has introduced Policy Condition No. 6 under Chapter 71, specifically governing the import of Platinum Articles.

Revised Import Status

  • HS Code: 71141920

  • Item Description: Articles of platinum

  • Earlier Import Policy: Free

  • Revised Import Policy: Restricted

  • Effective Date: Immediate

This means that fresh imports of platinum articles will now require specific authorization, unless they fall under defined exemptions.

Policy Condition No. 6 – Allowed Categories of “Free” Import

While the overall import policy has been made “Restricted”, DGFT has clearly carved out limited and specific exemptions. Import of platinum articles shall remain “Free” only in the following cases:

Exceptions permitted free Imports

  1. Re-import of Indian-origin goods

    • Goods earlier exported for overseas exhibitions or export promotion tours

  2. Re-import of rejected / returned / unsold goods

    • Indian-origin platinum articles sent abroad and returned without sale

  3. Re-import for repair purposes

    • Indian-origin platinum articles sent overseas for repair and re-imported back into India

 Key Point to be noted for free imports: -
All exemptions apply only to re-imports of Indian-origin goods. Fresh commercial imports are not covered.
