Tanker explosion in Bangladesh

On September 30 around 11 AM, a shuttle tank exploded on river karnaphuli at Eastern refinery in Chittagong. This is second vessel explosion in Bangladesh in last 1 month.

  • Vessel Name – Banglar Jyoti
  • Built – A vessel tanker built in1987 by Bangladesh Shipping Company
  • Deadweight – 14500 MT
  • The vessel was used to carry shuttle oil from larger on shore tankers to Eastern refinery of Bangladesh.

Just before explosion the crew members were repairing the vessel and offloading 11,000 MT of crude oil. The exact reason of explosion is not yet known and is under investigation.

Impact –The explosion’s intensity was so high that the decks body was ripped apart. 3 crew members have been reported dead.

After the incident – Bangladesh Navy and Coast Guard took the vessel to safety Zone. It took few hours to stop the fire.

In previous explosion within the same month, 6 peoples were injured. The country’s port regulations should be stricter to avoid these types of issues.
