Two Sanctioned oil tankers Kairos and Virat attacked at Black Sea

Incidence - Recently on 28th November 2025, 2 vessels Kairos and Virat were attacked in the Black Sea near North Turkey.

Impact - The vessel has been damaged but the crew has been evacuated safely from both the vessels.

Tanker Kairos was sailing to Novorossiysk, Russia and was empty when attacked

At the time of attack the tanker was sailing 28 nautical miles of Kocaeli, Turkey. The vessel caught fire after the attack.

There were total 25 crew members, who were evacuated safely due to immediate response from evacuation team.

Presently the tanker is located in Black Sea, moored near Cannakale port, Turkey. Below are the details of the tanker

  •        Type – Crude Oil Tanker

  •        IMO – 9236004

  •        Dimension - (LOA) is 274 meters and her width is 48.04 meters

  •        Flag - Gambia


    Tanker Virat was attacked an hour after blast on tanker Kairos. There was damage in the engine room and smoke was seen.

There were total 20 crew members, who were evacuated safely and later the vessel was reported safe. Below are the details of the tanker.

  •        Name - VIRAT

  •        Type – Crude Oil Tanker

  •        IMO – 9832559

  •        Dimension - (LOA) is 250 meters and her width is 44 meters

  •        Flag - Gambia



    Reason of the attack – Present the reason is not known, it can be an attack through submarine / drone / missile / pre-planted mine or any other way. The investigation is going on.

As per announcement form the transport ministry of Turkey these two vessels are sanctioned vessels used to transport Russian oil.

After Russia- Ukraine war started in February 2024, these types of attacks have been regular from both the sides.
