Tanker Gas Al Ahmadiah hit off UAE coast amid rising Strait of Hormuz tensions

The LPG tanker Gas Al Ahmadiah was struck by an unidentified projectile on 16 March 2026 while at anchor approximately 23 nautical miles east of Fujairah, highlighting escalating risks in Middle East shipping lanes.
The incident was reported to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) Centre, which confirmed that the vessel’s captain had been hit by a projectile. Maritime security firm Vanguard identified the vessel as Gas Al Ahmadiah. Despite the attack, no major structural damage or pollution was reported, and all crew members remained safe.
Authorities have initiated an investigation and issued advisories for vessels to exercise caution while transiting the region.
The attack comes amid heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global energy trade. Iran has been linked to a series of recent maritime incidents following its ongoing conflict with the United States and Israel, increasing the risk profile for commercial shipping.
Operational impact:
Rising war-risk insurance premiums
Increased vessel hesitancy near Gulf anchorages
Potential delays in oil, LPG, and chemical cargo movement
It is important to note that even anchored vessels are now exposed, shifting risk from transit routes to port waiting zones—expanding the threat perimeter for global shipping.
