The Cameroon-flagged crude oil tanker Blue was reportedly struck by a Ukrainian Sea Baby naval drone near Yalta, Crimea, on 8 July 2026. Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that the drone hit the vessel's stern while it was operating off the occupied Crimean coast. Russian authorities have not independently confirmed the reported damage.
According to Ukrainian officials, Blue is part of Russia's so-called shadow fleet—a network of ageing tankers used to transport Russian crude oil outside Western sanctions. Kyiv has increasingly targeted vessels and infrastructure linked to Russia's oil exports, arguing that they support the country's war effort.
The incident follows a series of Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian oil facilities and shadow fleet vessels in recent weeks, indicating a broader strategy to disrupt Russia's energy supply chain. Although commercial shipping in the wider Black Sea continues, attacks on vessels associated with sanctioned cargoes are adding to security concerns and operational risks in the region.
For shipowners and charterers operating in or near the Black Sea, the incident highlights the growing threat posed by unmanned maritime systems. Continued attacks on Russia's shadow fleet could lead to higher war-risk insurance premiums, stricter voyage risk assessments and increased scrutiny of sanctioned shipping operations.
