Rising Middle East tensions put Indian seafarers and tanker operations at risk

Indian seafarers are facing growing risks as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East increasingly affect commercial shipping. The latest incident involved the tanker MT Jalveer near Oman's Sohar coast, where a fire triggered a distress situation while approximately 20 Indian crew members were onboard. Authorities confirmed that all crew members were safe and investigations into the cause remain underway.

The incident follows recent attacks involving MT Marywaks and MT Setbello, where Indian sailors were also present, highlighting a concerning pattern affecting merchant shipping in the region. While military tensions continue to dominate headlines, commercial vessels carrying fuel and essential cargo are becoming increasingly exposed to operational disruptions and security threats.

India remains outside the ongoing regional conflicts, yet Indian seafarers—who form a significant portion of the global maritime workforce—continue to operate in some of the world's most sensitive shipping corridors. Their role remains critical in maintaining energy flows, commodity movements, and international supply chains.

The recurring incidents underscore the need for stronger maritime security measures, enhanced crew protection protocols, and closer international coordination to safeguard civilian shipping in high-risk waters.
