Pilbara ports February throughput hits 55.9 mt amid strong iron ore flows

Pilbara Ports reported total throughput of 55.9 million tonnes (Mt) in February 2026, reflecting continued strength in bulk exports, led primarily by iron ore shipments.

The February figure follows a record 67.9 Mt handled in January 2026, which marked the highest January throughput on record and a 12% year-on-year increase, driven by operational improvements and higher vessel utilisation.

Port Hedland remains the dominant contributor, handling the majority of volumes, largely iron ore, while Dampier continues to support export flows with double-digit growth trends seen in recent months.

On a broader scale, Pilbara Ports has maintained sustained high throughput, with monthly volumes typically ranging between 64–71 Mt in late 2025 and early 2026, indicating stable demand despite global market fluctuations.

Operational impact:

  • Strong iron ore exports continue to support vessel demand and berth utilisation

  • Improved sailing windows and port efficiency measures are increasing cargo handling capacity

  • Consistent high volumes indicate stable bulk shipping demand in the Asia-Pacific trade
