MSC Alexandra mooring failure at Mundra highlights weather risk at berth

On March 21, ultra-large container vessel MSC Alexandra (~14,000 TEU) broke mooring lines during severe weather at Mundra Port, drifting off CT3 berth before being stabilized. High winds and thunderstorms also disrupted yard operations, with containers toppled and temporary port shutdown measures activated.

The Panama-flagged vessel had arrived only days earlier. No casualties, pollution, or confirmed structural damage have been reported.

From an operational standpoint, this is a weather-load exceedance event, not carrier-specific. ULCS vessels face extreme lateral forces under sudden beam winds; mooring systems can reach failure thresholds within minutes even at berth.

For trade flows, impact remains localized but relevant: short-term berth disruption, potential bunching, and downstream schedule slippage. With Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone handling elevated volumes amid Middle East route instability, such incidents amplify congestion risk.
