Khor Fakkan to Jebel Ali container movement price and time

Industry discussions indicate that the transportation cost for moving one 20-foot container from Khor Fakkan to Jebel Ali is now ranging around AED 4,500 (approximately USD 1,225), depending on congestion, truck availability, customs movement approvals, and shipping line arrangements. Several market participants reported even higher costs during peak congestion periods.

The road distance between Khor Fakkan and Jebel Ali is approximately 170–190 kilometers depending on the trucking corridor used through the UAE highway network. Under normal conditions, the transit itself can be completed within a few hours, but current delays are being driven mainly by port congestion, truck queues, customs documentation, and bonded movement formalities.

What is changing rapidly, however, is the commercial responsibility.

Initially, many importers and freight forwarders were forced to absorb the unexpected trucking and congestion charges themselves. But now several shipping lines are reportedly evaluating or already implementing temporary solutions where the carrier arranges the inland movement from Khor Fakkan to Jebel Ali at their own operational responsibility in order to retain customers and avoid cargo diversion to competing services. Industry discussions suggest carriers are under pressure to maintain cargo flow despite rising operational costs and schedule disruptions.

The biggest challenge currently is congestion at Khor Fakkan itself. Truck waiting times, container release delays, and berth congestion have increased significantly as more vessels are diverted from direct Jebel Ali calls. Importers are also facing additional demurrage, detention, and war-risk-related surcharges while waiting for bonded transfers into Dubai.

Some carriers have also started evaluating alternative UAE and regional gateways including Sohar, Salalah, and Jeddah to stabilize schedules and reduce congestion pressure on Khor Fakkan. However, each alternative increases inland transportation complexity and overall supply chain cost.

For UAE importers, the situation has effectively created a temporary “dual-port logistics model” where Khor Fakkan acts as the discharge hub while Jebel Ali remains the final customs and distribution gateway for Dubai cargo. The longer the congestion continues, the more likely shipping lines will need to absorb part of the inland transportation cost to protect market share and maintain schedule reliability.
