Indian Navy's merchant ship rescue highlighted as China calls for stronger maritime cooperation

China has publicly acknowledged the Indian military's rescue of 12 Chinese crew members from the Singapore-flagged container vessel Wan Hai 503, describing the operation as an example of humanitarian cooperation at sea. The remarks were made by China's Defence Attaché to India, Rear Admiral You Jian, during an event marking the 99th anniversary of the People's Liberation Army (PLA). He stated that China "will not forget" India's assistance during the emergency and expressed support for closer military communication between the two countries.

The rescue followed a major fire and explosion aboard Wan Hai 503 while the vessel was operating off the Kerala coast. Responding to the distress, the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation, evacuating all 12 Chinese seafarers safely despite the challenging conditions.
