India Restricts Import for Unstudded Platinum Jewellery from 17th Nov 2025

The Ministry of Commerce & Industry of Government of India, has issued a notification on 17th Nov 2025 (Notification No. 48/2025-26) bringing a change in the imports policy for certain precious metal jewelry items. This amendment restricts the imports of unstudded platinum from 17th Nov 2025 till 30th April 2026 and till further notice.

For Indian exports and imports, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), exercising powers under the Foreign Trade (Development & Regulation) Act, 1992, has revised the import policy for - Parts of platinum: unstudded, HS Code   71131921

Previous Status: Duty Free imports

Revised Status: Restricted

Validity of Change: With immediate effect until 30 April 2026

New Process - Importers would need a prior permission or license from DGFT. Importers would need to submit their import application under the ‘Restricted Item License’ category through DGFT’s online portal.

Reason for Change - These type of restrictions are usually imposed to Control non-essential imports, Protect domestic manufacturers and Improve regulatory oversight of precious metal imports

Given the high value and sensitivity of platinum in global markets, the government may be attempting to regulate inflow more tightly.

Businessman involved in the jewelry and precious metals industry should react quickly by aligning procurement processes with DGFT's licensing norms.
