
For years, port automation in India was mostly about cranes, gates and digital paperwork.
Now, it is reaching the point where even the way a ship is held at the berth is being automated.
Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has taken a significant step by initiating the installation of 18 automated vacuum mooring units at the GTI Terminal. The Government of India tender for the project is valued at ₹60.35 crore.
This may sound like a small operational upgrade. It isn't.
Traditional mooring depends on ropes and manual intervention. Automated vacuum mooring uses mechanical suction units to secure a vessel to the berth, potentially making the process faster, more controlled and safer.
And that matters because time at a port has a cost.
Every minute saved in berthing and unberthing can contribute to better berth utilisation, smoother vessel movement and, ultimately, faster cargo flow.
What is particularly interesting is the direction in which Indian ports are moving.
The focus is no longer only on building bigger terminals. It is increasingly about getting more productivity from the infrastructure already available.
JNPA's project is therefore more than a new piece of equipment. It is another sign that Indian ports are moving from conventional operations towards automation, precision and data-driven logistics.
For exporters and importers, that is the real story.
Because a faster ship turnaround does not end at the berth. It can eventually mean a faster supply chain from port to warehouse, factory and customer.
India wants to become a major global manufacturing and logistics hub.
For that ambition, our ports cannot just be bigger.
They have to become smarter.
And this could be one of those small changes that quietly helps make that happen.
