How Kandla port Is emerging as India’s green hydrogen gateway
Today on On January 12, 2026, the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Kandla signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Green-Kutch NextGen Pvt. Ltd. to develop the “Kutch Green Hydrogen Park” at Kandla Port, Gujarat.
Aim -
The agreement aims to build plug-and-play infrastructure for green hydrogen production, storage, and related ecosystem participation, especially by MSMEs, while creating jobs and supporting clean energy goals.
This initiative supports India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and the country’s Net-Zero Vision by expanding renewable energy usage and reducing carbon emissions in industrial and maritime sectors.
Kandla is already becoming a focal point for hydrogen and clean fuels within India’s maritime sector, with earlier projects like a 1 MW green hydrogen plant at the port (the first of its kind in India) commissioned in 2025. That facility produces ~140 tons of green hydrogen annually using renewable power and is planned to scale up to 10 MW.
Value creation
Empowers local MSMEs to participate in clean energy value chains.
Job creation for youth and new skill development in hydrogen technologies.
Enhances port competitiveness with future fuel supply options for shipping and logistics.
Earlier Investments & Ecosystem Steps:
India’s first port-based green hydrogen plant (1 MW) at Kandla was commissioned in mid-2025, part of a wider 10 MW scale-up by 2026.
DPA has previously collaborated on green hydrogen and ammonia development projects, indicating long-term strategic planning in this domain.
This shows how the MoU is not an isolated event — it is part of an ongoing multi-year progression aimed at building a significant clean fuels ecosystem at Kandla Port.
Future potential
Industrial Growth:
If the green hydrogen park builds out fully with plug-and-play infrastructure, it could attract a cluster of producers and storage players, accelerating both supply and demand for hydrogen and related derivatives like green ammonia.
Export & Logistic Advantage:
Ports with hydrogen infrastructure can serve future green fuel bunkering needs, potentially positioning Kandla as a key node in emerging green shipping corridors — similar to goals seen for other major ports globally.
