To keep the supply chain ongoing, DP World has come up with a solution to ensure that cargo destined for Dubai can continue moving smoothly even in the Strait of Hormuz crisis.
UAE ports included in the alternative arrangement
Under this arrangement, ships can unload containers at two major UAE ports located along the eastern coast:
Khorfakkan Port
Port of Fujairah
Both ports are strategically positioned on the Gulf of Oman, allowing vessels to avoid entering the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz.
Below is the distance and time -
Khorfakkan Port to Jebel Ali port – Via Emirates road E611 & Khor Fakkan road S142 – 166 km, drive of ~ 2 hours.
Port of Fujairah to Jebel Ali port – via Emirates road E611 – 156 km drive of ~2 hours.
The rate confirmation for above is yet to come, will update shortly if there are comments or mail on these requirements.
Its also important to note that Khor Fakkan port is 1/4th in terms of annual container handling capacity of Jebel Ali port thus above 2 ports will face extreme congestion but with 24*7 operations and timely clearance of containers the supply can be made smooth.
These ports already play important roles as transshipment and bunkering hubs, making them suitable alternatives for cargo discharge when required.
How the alternative import process works
The revised logistics process allows cargo to continue reaching Dubai through a coordinated land transport system.
Step 1 – Vessel discharge
Ships unload import containers at Khorfakkan or Fujairah instead of sailing directly to Jebel Ali.
Step 2 – bonded inland transportation
Containers are transported by bonded trucking services from the eastern UAE ports to Jebel Ali.
Step 3 – customs clearance in Dubai
Once the cargo reaches Jebel Ali, the normal import customs clearance process is completed.
Step 4 – final delivery
After clearance, goods are delivered to importers or free zone facilities as per the original shipment plan.
This process ensures minimal disruption for importers while maintaining regulatory compliance.
Benefits for shipping lines and importers
The alternative routing arrangement offers several advantages for global trade participants.
Improved supply chain resilience / Operational flexibility for carriers / Protection against regional disruptions / Importers can maintain inventory flows despite geopolitical uncertainties.
Importance for global exporters
Dubai serves as a major distribution hub for the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia. Many international exporters depend on Jebel Ali to access regional markets.
For exporters from countries like India, maintaining stable access to UAE ports is critical because Dubai acts as a re-export gateway to several neighbouring markets.
The ability to route cargo through alternative ports ensures that shipments continue reaching regional buyers without significant delays.
