CMA CGM introduces world's largest LNG-powered containership

French shipping giant CMA CGM has officially christened the CMA CGM NOTRE DAME, the world's largest LNG-powered containership, marking another milestone in the maritime industry's transition toward lower-emission shipping. The vessel is the first of a new series of ten ultra-large dual-fuel container ships that will operate on the company's flagship French Asia Line (FAL) connecting Asia with Northern Europe.

With a capacity of 24,212 TEU, the CMA CGM NOTRE DAME measures 400 metres in length, 62 metres in beam, and approximately 75 metres in height, making it one of the largest container vessels ever built. Powered primarily by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the vessel incorporates advanced digital navigation systems, artificial intelligence-assisted operational technologies and energy-efficiency features designed to improve fuel performance while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants compared with conventional marine fuels.

The vessel is the latest step in CMA CGM's long-term decarbonisation strategy. The company pioneered ultra-large LNG-powered container ships in 2020 with the CMA CGM Jacques Saadé, the world's first 23,000+ TEU LNG-powered containership. The new NOTRE DAME class increases carrying capacity while continuing the carrier's investment in alternative marine fuels and next-generation vessel technology.

Beyond environmental performance, the introduction of larger LNG-powered ships strengthens capacity on one of the world's busiest east-west trade lanes. Higher slot capacity enables more containers to be transported per voyage, improving economies of scale and helping carriers manage growing trade volumes between Asia and Europe. The remaining nine sister vessels are scheduled for delivery between 2026 and early 2028, further modernising CMA CGM's fleet and reinforcing its position among the global leaders in sustainable container shipping.
