Chittagong port sees 4.07% growth in containers handling in 2025 — a new record for it.

Bangladesh’s busiest seaport, Chittagong Port, recorded a 4.07% increase in container (box) handling in the calendar year 2025 even though the state saw a political turmoil and change in ruling party.

Facts –

Container throughput reached 3,409,069 TEUs, the highest annual figure in the port’s history.

Cargo handling jumped by 11.43%, totalling around 138.15 million metric tons.

Vessel handling grew by 10.50%, with 4,273 ship calls during the year.

Situated on the Karnaphuli River near the Bay of Bengal and established in the 1970s, Chittagong Port has evolved from a regional harbour into Bangladesh’s principal maritime gateway, handling nearly 98% of the country’s containerized import and export traffic.

Growth in 2025 was supported by:

• Addition of modern cargo-handling equipment and yard capacity expansion.

• Better vessel turnaround times — including periods of zero waiting time, allowing ships to berth immediately upon arrival.

• Improved digital systems such as e-Moot Pass and online bill processing to streamline port documentation and reduce delays.

Similarly, a notable increase in vessel handling by around 10% was due to stronger traffic from both global liner services and regional shipping networks.
