China Coast Guard patrols east of Taiwan, prompting Taipei response

China’s Coast Guard conducted patrols east of Taiwan on July 31, prompting Taiwan to deploy vessels to monitor the activity.

Incident

China said the patrols were part of routine law-enforcement operations. Taiwan reported that China Coast Guard vessels Xiushan and Chongming were operating east of Orchid Island, with one vessel around 151 nautical miles offshore and the other about 43 nautical miles northeast of the island.

Taiwan’s Coast Guard accused Beijing of using maritime law enforcement to expand its control and said it was closely monitoring the vessels.

Impact

The patrols are significant because they took place on Taiwan’s Pacific-facing side, an area considered strategically important for maritime access and potential supply routes.

For commercial shipping, the increased presence of Chinese Coast Guard vessels could create greater uncertainty if patrols become more frequent or involve attempts to question or inspect merchant vessels.
